The Daily Edit and Privacy

News media has divided our society. We consume more news, but we trust our news sources less. The Daily Edit wants to fill that trust gap by giving you AI-powered tools to analyze a story, such as the ability to highlight text that appears to be manipulative or missing and links so you can easily access different sources for the same story.

We recognize that we need to be transparent too. Our privacy policy describes how we collect, use, and disclose information when you interact with our website and mobile app. If you have any questions about this Policy or our privacy practices generally, please contact us directly using the contact information below. We also offer several ways to opt out of certain data uses, which we list in the “Your Options and Rights Regarding Your Information” section below.

What we collect, and how we use and disclose it: We collect information from or about you from three sources: the information you give us, the information we collect automatically when you browse our website or use our app, and the information we collect from third-party sources such as the single sign-on functionality managed by social media platforms. The types of information we collect include information that identifies you (such as name, username, contact information), information about the device you use to interact with us (such as IP address, device IDs, and metadata that we capture using third parties like Google Analytics), and any information associated with those data types (such as your email correspondence with us). We use that information to provide you with The Daily Edit app and subscription and for our business purposes, including advertising to you. We disclose information we collect from or about you primarily to the service providers that support our business functions like database hosting and IT and software development support.

Finally, please know that our app uses machine learning to compare articles and annotate them. We train our machine learning algorithm by analyzing article text and counting the number of user disputes our article annotations have. We do not use user or subscriber identities, or personal information, to train our algorithm.

Entities to whom we disclose information for business purposes are service providers, which are companies that we engage to conduct activities on our behalf. We restrict service providers from using personal information for any purpose that is not related to our engagement.

Entities to whom we “sell” information are third parties. Under the CCPA, a business “sells” personal information when it discloses personal information to a company for monetary or other benefit. A company may be considered a third party either because we disclose personal information to the company for something other than an enumerated business purpose under California law, or because its contract does not restrict it from using personal information for purposes unrelated to the service it provides to us.
